Brunner Releases Post General Election Report In Advance of Historic Ohio Elections Conference

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner released Tuesday the official 2008 Post General Election Report to Gov. Ted Strickland and the leaders of the General Assembly.  The report documents the preparations, in partnership with bipartisan boards of elections, which led to the 2008 elections being widely hailed as the most successful in a generation.

The report was released prior to the Ohio Elections Conference where participants will help set the stage for a bipartisan roadmap to further enhance voter confidence in the operation of Ohio’s elections system.

“In 2008, the Secretary of State’s office focused on the tools local boards of elections needed to provide Ohio voters with an efficient, orderly election.  Based on information from the election, this preparation resulted in a successfully administered election that reinvigorated voter confidence in our bipartisan elections system,” Secretary Brunner said.

Highlights of the 2008 Post General Election Report:

  • Ohio’s 2008 set historic records for overall voter participation in a general election with 5,775,000 Ohioans casting ballots.
  • Ohioans set new records for early voting as well, casting 1,744,700 absentee ballots, 30% of the total votes cast.
  • Nearly 81% of all provisional ballots cast were counted.
  • Voter intent on a total of 12,207 “double bubble” ballots was able to be determined in a consistent, timely manner by boards of elections, thanks to a Secretary of State directive.
  • More than 44,000 Quick Reference Guides were provided for county boards of elections to distribute to every poll worker for use in training and in polling locations.
  • A total of 11,174 ballots were received from overseas absentee voters.
